Developed as a tribute to Ms. Gabrielle Gayle and her love for reading. Merrick Academy introduced MACS at MACS, Making All Children (feel) Safe at Merrick Academy Charter School. Weekly bedtime stories for our K-3rd grade students, read by our 4th and 5th graders.

very nice very nice did everyone have a nice long weekend yes, we're almost in June already I can't believe it it is going for me what's on your what's on your road what characters on your road it says because of them we can that's what you said because of them we can oh wow that is nice, very nice where is Desiree all right I think we're going to get started misuraca do you mind if I give some norms and then you and ask some question yeah and we'll get started so I'm just going to see if I guess a little loud on mute all of us but right now everyone's being very respectful and listening really nicely and I also am going to toss it over to miss Anderson actually maybe we'll do that first listen if you want to go over the program and your ideas and thoughts behind it and and the why that would be awesome and then we'll go over some of the North okay great can everyone hear me yes we have some technical difficulties just want to make sure everyone can hear me welcome to Max the Max Max Max stands making all children feel stay at Merrick Academy charter school and I designed the program to help the children still come through these very challenging. songs of the pandemic as adults we are racing around in rushing around to make sure we create some want to make sure you're comfortable to so this is just a quiet time for us to share with one another for the young people is given the respect listen and enjoy the story and that everyone takes the time now you can ask questions after about the story of his life and the whole purpose is just for us to share facts to relate and to release the tension of the day hope everyone finished all their assignments for today and now it's your time or right thank you so much Miss Anderson for this fantastic Gia thank you all new Miss Cummings who's been doing a great job of helping us create the program and supported as well Max at Max was also created to in Miss gay how's memory and to keep her her Legacy going so we really really appreciate everything behind the program and doing something above and beyond for forearm are family so thank you Miss Anderson who are the Nords I know Miss Anderson talks about them a little bit we'll just make sure that you mute yourself or we all are have everybody Newton how it typically Works has that last a couple of questions at the beginning will introduce the reader and we're very excited for our reader tonight and then we'll have some questions that we ask afterwards the only thing that we recommend that the top right of your Zoom screen there is something that says speaker view so if you click on that you'll be able to see whoever is speaking at the time very clearly and this is very important when Cory starts because you'll be able to see the book and the pictures of the book very clearly also so just keep that in mind we recommend you use the speaker View at the top right of your screen so that you can see the reader and the book so I'm going to pass it over to Miss Ross and she's going to ask some questions of you all right thank you miss larocca the welcome I miss Morocco might have seen me around the school that can in third grade I'm really excited to be here with you guys tonight then I just might first night here but I heard some of you were here last week and Jump Right In and be a part of this with you guys tonight we're going to read the book different Just Like Me by Lori Mitchell and Cory Skelton is going to read us this lovely book we are all different but we are all still the same in some ways so I wanted to start off with a question why is it okay to be different why is it okay to be everybody want to respond because big cat we be different being different YouTube being different is there being unique I love that word what a great word is being unique and it is okay to be unique job does anybody else want to respond why is it okay to be different what do you do the questions how are we different how are we different how how are we different how are kids different Cory houchens different kids are short what about hair some kids have short hair some kids have some kids that's right we all have the same skin color send square glasses glasses and some of us don't breathe and how is it saying are all humans humans great where we all go to learn boys and girls alright so I'm going to get started and Cory's going to begin reading Cory is in the fourth grade and he's going to begin reading this wonderful. about being different and being the same you're on Quarry different Just Like Me by Lori Mitchell it was late Sunday night and all I could see was watching my fish swim around and around April I mean you're excited all I want to hear this way of saying it was time for so I slept my pillow and close my eyes it was going to wait until hard to wait until Friday Monday morning Mom said I went to run errands we got on the bus and sat across the aisle from a girl about my age me and smile Through the Motions with her motions with her hand so what's your friend that's because that girl could words mom said it's a different way of talking called sign language I waved goodbye to the girl just like me on Tuesday we went to the farmer's market apples fruit with names again even know you spoke different languages but they all like stopping at the farmers market recycling on Wednesday we went to Dad office to visit he works on the 10th floor elevator button mom said it's a different way of reading called Bradley push button and got up at her for just like me agency where dad works was a newspaper introduced by who is John she's a grown up she still likes to draw my mom took me out to eat our favorite things I always like to sit at the counter because she lets me spin around before we eat can a glass of milk just like me before we left I went to the I smiled and she said hello just like me Mom and I finally went to visit Grammy to get to the train station stops different windows while we wait for the train I saw a boy standing by his mom pirate hat just like me the train moves very fast from my very fast from my window I began to see lots of places I've seen before what are walking down Grammy Street Garden filled with beautiful flowers Grammy's neighbor red roses planted in straight rows of flowers there were marigolds Violet and many other flowers in every color of the rainbow Rite Aid grand opening just like me Miss mrs. Wong mrs. Wong grandson Andrew is my friend he always comes to see me when I visit Grammy we had a race from Grammys to the mailbox to see the he is very quick just like me Andrew had to go home for dinner everytime I told me to like them all Grammy help me pack my bag for the trip when I saw the next she gave me an armful of flowers from her garden and a big hug goodbye next to me and all the other people things about everyone we have seen over the last week the the bus is Shoppers in the market in Man In Diner like the flowers in Granny's Garden all different from one another and that's what made them so great I'm glad everyone is different just like me what is a CORI Sunshine everybody she read that too so beautifully you didn't stretch a great job excellent you about the book he likes about the book I like the flowers I like the flowers were all the flower no no and that was okay that they were all different good job what else did we like about the book I like the Transportation a lot of it and what is the big lesson that we learned because Corey read that book what is the lesson we learn and it's okay that everybody's different even though we're the same everybody is different and that's what makes everybody so you mean I'm using my special word that you used before Jazz great job everyone I really enjoyed reading that with you miss Hazel's going to go over a few more things because you all that fantastic listening I'm behaving great job boys and girls thank you Mister Rogers a phenomenal job Corey that was awesome real story just that you know Cory pics is Dory out himself and he's been practicing he sounded fantastic so thank you for picking a story that was perfect for us and had such an important message so thank you so much Corey the things that will what I want to announce our next reader I don't see him on tonight but our next reader next week is going to be Omar he's also in fourth grade and he's going to be reading a dr. Seuss book called green eggs and ham so we're really excited Omar picked out the book himself as well and I don't know he might be a line underneath on a different name but if I don't see him here so if he is on just raise your hand if if Omar is here and then I'll I'll introduce you but so one of the things that we wanted to check in with is just to see if timing and everything is okay Miss larocca Miss and Miss Kay if you don't mind kind of looking out and doing and see everyone screen cuz I'm just going to ask some questions if you don't mind just try to try to keep track how I people are responding that would be really helpful we just wanted to do a brief quick survey over the screen so that we can see what you would prefer as far as Air Max at Max so one of the questions is and you can show us by showing your fingers on a scale of 1 to 5 with 5 being the best how much do you weigh the max at Max program so if I don't like Max at Max at all it's only a one if I like it the absolute best it's a 5 if I like it just okay it's three fingers so you you decide to have you like at 1 2 3 4 5 how much do you like Max at Max oh I see a 10 all right we didn't even go that high that's awesome alright thank you this is so helpful awesome thank you so much the next question and this might be something that you write in the chat that might be the easiest way to do it is if you can share what day give the week is best for you to do Mac that Max if Wednesday is good for you than you can say same but if you think another day is better you can type it Monday or Tuesday or Thursday or Friday put it into the chat battery place on Saturday or Saturday that's a good question we should go look into that I think it's difficult because some p I work on the weekends it's also difficult because some people don't work on the weekend and they already have other plans with their family and so forth but you can definitely put that into the chat if you prefer Saturday or Sunday and will take that into consideration and we'll find out if people can do it on the weekends also great question all this information is super house ball awesome getting a lot of answers in chat right now thank you I'm going to move on to the next question I like one person suggested Friday and said because we can make it extra fun they sent it privately they sell almost like a fun Friday continuation from a class so that that's that's a great idea okay you can keep entering in the days if you want one another question is what time of day is good for you and I think the easiest way for put it in putting it into the chat would be lunch time it could be the afternoon or evening so lunch time afternoon or night time there way you can put that information in the chat awesome that's super helpful write a lot of people like the evening I remember I know that we've been calling it a Max at Max bedtime story but it could also be Max at Max lunch time story so I don't let the the wording change your mind but but I like I am I'm seeing a lot of evening so that's good that's convenient for people excellent and the last question is how can we make Max at Max better it's something you want to type in you could type it in or if you want to raise your hand you can raise your hand and I will do my best to unmute you in a very quick amount of time if I have you muted if not you can unmute yourself do you need to put it in the chat what could make Max at Max better or you could raise your hand and share it with us I think I think you make Max at Max better by letting letting each person in one and a fourth grader in a class one at a time they could go like class by class you could make 4th graders and 5th grade reading okay that's a great suggestion I hace Someone putting to books a night and actually that's some of the feedback that we got from our last survey thank you Isaiah and that feedback we're actually talking about so that way I buy two bucks a night and then they might be steamed so the both books will be connected in one way or another so maybe it'll be a fiction and nonfiction around the same topic or it might be a and a fiction or Palma nonfiction around the same topic they're finding ways to connect them I don't think we're going to have time to make it happen by next week so next week we'll still be the one book week for the moving forward after that will do two books and I and an evening because it seems like we have the time to do it and and it seems like people will be excited to hear two stories and then we can have a few readers also at night and I know we have some readers who want to do it again so this way other people will get the opportunity to do it as well as some people who want to read it also any other ideas for Max at Max better Ava I need some dime I don't know. Stop the Mini Max and Max better maybe we should like like do it like to be like on Friday because sometimes we don't have that much work on Friday to do that's a great idea yeah I like that idea and I saw someone put all so that maybe we could do it after the movie night cuz everybody gets excited as the great movie and then they get a bedtime story and then I close is out there their weeks so that's something we'll talk about it be too late at night for us to do that because some kids go to bed earlier than others and remember we have students in kindergarten all the way up to 5th grade so our 5th graders might be going to bed later than our kindergarteners but we don't want anyone miss out so so where you were definitely considering all options good idea about any more ideas okie dokie so what we're going to do we're going to send out the survey for our our participants were going to send out the survey to our reader we want to thank Cory Soma for reading thank you did an awesome idea and something that we've been talking about as we've been planning is it possible to maybe highlight the kids on the website yeah maybe the reader the reader for the week and we can have maybe the kids can you to take a picture of Corey to take a picture next to the book and then you can post that website love it good idea Mesquite definitely we can make that happen who's Chromebook 7 DDA I like to eat too I was just reading that I know this might be around dinner time for some some people their stomachs are rumbling I just wanted to thank all of you so much because this is our second Max at Max and we have about the same amount of people in attendance Maybe a bit more this week so it's telling me that you're sharing with your friends you're coming back again and you're really enjoying it so we really love all of you who are coming and listening and doing a fantastic job and participate in your pajamas and your sleep mask I love it I love it so thank you all very much for for making our community just stronger is it possible to get like maybe an email or a text reminder on the day off because I put it on my calendar and this is the second time that I told what we'll do is I'll try to be better about sending out an invite like a week ahead or 6 days ahead of time Amanda Nall said another one the day off I'll thank you so much no problem so sorry about that it's our fault we just I did not hear my phone it happens any other questions concerns I saw someone said that they like to read ProBook 70 da does that mean that you are volunteering to read future IMAX at Max are they might have gotten off I'll reach out to them we are looking we're still looking for reader so if you are in 4th or 5th grade and you want to be a reader definitely let us know app something sure sometimes put on the first day second graders on Thursday is read to the 5th graders and fourth graders but I don't mean we have to do what do you think Miss Anderson but I don't see that being an issue I think that would be great if you are strong and confident in your really welcome anybody who wants to be a reader so maybe like the younger parent and child thing they can do it together so we get more parent involvement as well and they can help their child definitely and there is nothing that you brought up a picture move differently to different spot on my screen there was something that you brought up that was really important and that some kids yeah are shy but may also want to participate so something that we were taught about as well as possibly pre-recording so you could read the story and record it and send it to us will watch it and then we could play it at a future Max at Max so that this way if you're a little nervous you've already done the hard part of actually recording it and then we'll listen it listen to it so that's something else that we thought of too so that's an option as well so I'm glad you brought that up.
