Merrick Academy Board of Trustees Meeting Minutes
March 8th, 2016 (Emergency Meeting)
As Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Merrick Academy, it is my distinct pleasure to welcome our returning parents -I am so pleased to have you and your children back with us for another year. We in the Merrick Academy family cannot tell you how much we appreciate the trust and confidence you have bestowed on us by choosing to leave your most precious possession in our hands. By “us,” I mean the Board of Trustees, the administration, and the faculty and staff of Merrick Academy.
The Board of Trustees represents the final position on the policies and initiatives of Merrick Academy. The Board is a group of professionals who volunteer their time in order to supervise and direct the operation of the school. We manage the Principal and administrators in complying with and meeting and exceeding the standards, laws, and regulations set by the State University of New York (SUNY) and their sub-department, called the Charter Schools Institute, which grants us a charter every five years in order for the school to continue to open its doors and operate. As community leaders, we use our talents and networks to provide vision, resources, and leadership to create a different type of school that destroys the achievement gap between our communities and other more affluent areas. We believe that children who are educated in a caring, loving, well-rounded manner will be competent, caring, accomplished citizens of our society.
We offer a parent manual as a resource guide. We encourage you to let our Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) help you address school wide-concerns. To be more efficient in handling your concerns regarding your child in particular, we recommend that you use the prescribed chain of command described in this manual.
We look forward to meeting you all in the upcoming year as you volunteer at school events and programs. With everyone putting the children first, we can make the African proverb of a village raising a child a reality!
Finally, on behalf of the Board of Trustees of Merrick Academy, WELCOME!
Gerald Karikari, Esq.
Chairman, Board of Trustees
